Video Game Epilepsy Seizures

Information on Video Games Epilepsy

More than three million people in the United States are affected by epilepsy.  Of those, approximately 90,000 people have a condition known as photosensitive epilepsy.  This condition is often referred to as video games epilepsy because seizures are often triggered by when playing video games.

Anyone who plays video games or has children or loved ones involved with gaming should be aware of the following information on video game epilepsy.

Video game epilepsy symptoms

Not all video game epilepsy cases are actually epilepsy at all – it is possible to experience seizures without having epilepsy.  The important thing to know is that, whether an individual experiences any symptoms that could be epilepsy from video games or some other seizure disorder, the symptoms are not always as severe as convulsions.

Any of these symptoms could point to a seizure disorder for epilepsy triggered by video games:

  • Blank staring
  • Rapid blinking or facial twitches
  • Jerking movements of the hands or other parts of the body
  • Loss of attention or even an inability to talk or respond
  • Signs of confusion
  • Reports of unusual or different-than-usual sights, sounds, or smells
  • Complaints of seemingly minor symptoms, such as a headache, dizziness, or nausea

Causes of epileptic seizures from video games

Many properties of video games and the monitors or televisions on which they are run can cause seizures in certain individuals:

  • Large screens that make horizontal scan lines more visible
  • Images that flash at a certain rate
  • High image contrast
  • The light wavelength
  • The distance between the player and the screen
  • Playing in a dimly lit room
